The Brief

At the time of our introduction, the site had a history of unsuccessful planning submissions. Completed in 2019, the scheme provides 8 new dwelling houses in a combination of detached and semi-detached configurations

The project brief was to create a small, mixed development of characterful and high quality houses, designed in a manner that would reference and respect the local vernacular, in style, detailing and materiality.

Our scheme introduces 8 new homes, thoughtfully arranged to reflect the village’s tight urban grain.

Project challenges

Being a fairly linear site presented a particular design challenge. This was overcome by creating a lane through the site, with dwellings arranged to front the street. Such lanes, running south from Keyhaven Road and the High Street, are a typical contextual feature and make an important contribution to local distinctiveness. This layout was also seen as a positive response to the tight urban grain of the village.

The southern end of the scheme was conceived to create a more open, low key character, in a green and spacious configuration with the dwellings respecting the strong visual connection with Danestream Valley. Considerable attention and care was taken to ensure that the proportions of the elevations, detailing of doors and windows and the materials selection was sympathetic to the surrounding development and that the scheme would enhance the Conservation Area.

The Local Planning Authority were persuaded that the development would be well designed and in keeping with the character of the town. Although, it was recognised that the loss of an existing employment site is contrary to policy, the Council considered that the benefits of a scheme sympathetic to the character and appearance of the Milford-on-Sea conservation area outweighed this.

The planning committee members unanimously accepted the case officer’s recommendation to grant planning permission
